The Most High, fronted by Alan Gill (Dalek I Love You/The Teardrop Explodes), deliver a jazzy and progressive atmospheric nebula of sounds, much up for the taking at their SoundCloud outpost. Staunch believers of the ‘magic in improvised music,’ The Most High indeed set the controls for the heart of the moment as well as the sun. As we’ve talked over before, there may not be fire in space, but there sure is smoke and The Most High have the requisite signals well in hand. Gill’s vocals come across like an appealing unlikely marriage of Roger Chapman, John Hiatt and a little David Sylvian for an extra kick. Main members Simon Walthew, Ikem Washner, and Phil Channell, with Gill taking guitar along with the vocals, move from soothing outer limit dissonance to tasteful chug and gallop through their sets. It’s as artful as it is purely head releasing; imbibe it on a variety of levels since they aim, and hit, a broad spectrum of targets and colors. Considering Gill’s pedigree, it’s embarrassing I just got to the party. But the party is in full swing and it only takes a few sonic cocktails to realize the soirée they throw has no beginning, end or uptight dress code.
"This show is 110% … one of the most consistently awesome programs we have come across."
The Sunrise Ocean Bender sets sail every Monday morning, 1 – 3 a.m. on WRIR lp 97.3 FM, to find something for your ears, and something for your head … From psych to prog to pop and whatever tributary we can find on the way … and right back around again. There might be a map, but the destination is up for grabs. If it all goes right, we may just get lost. Meet me at the muster station … it might be a long week.
