Alisa Coral’s (also of Psi Corps) ‘international space rock/metal collective’ Space Mirrors (Nik Turner and Alan Davey among others contributing to the line-up) bring the first in their ‘Cosmic Horror’ series, In Darkness They Whisper. Heavy and melodic, with some symphonic metal/prog flourishes, it’s a fantastical mix mining the fertile soil of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories for inspiration. To those not enamored by Lovecraft, or open to the whole idea, it might seem silly, but buying into it their occult cosmos doesn’t so much validate the offering as it does release if from puny human constraints; escapism delivered with full commitment, from expected Lovecraftian reserves and concepts (Chambers of Azatoth, Through The Dream Lands, From Dylath-Leen to the Dark Side Of The Moon, Moon Battle Of Cats, To Ngranek, Face Of God, Leng/The Crawling Chaos, and finally, Morning In Marvellous City) to Martyr Lucifer’s constricted, barking vocal delivery. Admittedly, it’s not for everyone, nor is it only for Lovecraft disciples. There’s repetitive riffs in the engine room, some cosmic and loose breaks and enough distortions on geometry, science, cats and the Old Ones to soundtrack your own dreamquest to the Mountains of Madness.

"This show is 110% … one of the most consistently awesome programs we have come across."
The Sunrise Ocean Bender sets sail every Monday morning, 1 – 3 a.m. on WRIR lp 97.3 FM, to find something for your ears, and something for your head … From psych to prog to pop and whatever tributary we can find on the way … and right back around again. There might be a map, but the destination is up for grabs. If it all goes right, we may just get lost. Meet me at the muster station … it might be a long week.
